FAQ - Maternity/Newborn
Newborn Session Info
If you are scheduling your newborn session ahead of time, it is best to get your due date on my calendar as soon as possible, somewhere in the second trimester, but if your about to have your baby or just did, I will do my best to get you into my schedule.
Since the arrival of your baby is typically unpredictable, I will reserve space on my calendar around the time of your due date to accommodate early of late arrivals. Please contact me as soon as baby arrives in order to schedule a date and time.
The sweet spot is between 1-2 weeks to get those adorable curly, sleepy newborns. But I am happy to photograph at any age. After 10 days, babies become more alert, causing them to startle more easily. They also discover the joys of stretching (which means they are harder to pose for) and they start developing baby acne. If your baby already has it, no worries! Trust me, you’ll want to remember your little one and every little detail.
When the time comes, no need to bring anything except you and baby! All props, wraps, tiebacks, bonnets, etc. are provided and for your use during your session! Sit back & relax, have a drink and some snacks while I work with your brand new miracle! I only use high end newborn props that are safe to use with your baby. I have now attended multiple newborn photography workshops and have had the training to properly handle, pose and care for your baby.
Megan Anne Foertography has everything you need for the session and is a full service studio.
On the day of the shoot
* Get the baby up early and bathe them. Have them kick naked on the bed for 20+ minutes.
* You can play with the baby and let the baby be stimulated after a fresh bath.
* Dress the baby in a zip up sleeper and feed the baby right before you arrive. Please do not put a full outfit on. I will need to remove it and it is hard to keep baby sleepy while removing.
* Keeping baby stimulated is very important so baby will sleep during photo session.
* It’s best to start on a full belly so feeding baby right before you put baby in the car seat to head my way is best; please make sure your baby has a good burp before placing baby in car seat so gas doesn’t settle on the drive here.
* If you live a good distance from my in-home studio, You can feed baby when you arrive, just let me know ahead of time.
* I know as a new parent things can be tough, new and overwhelming but please allow ample time to arrive to your session on time. I sometimes do multiple sessions in a day and its only fair everyone gets their full, allotted time.
* The room will be set around 23-25 degrees for baby so please dress accordingly.
* As I said, sessions typically take 2-3 hours+ even with a very sleepy baby. I work VERY slowly with your baby to ensure baby is always cozy and comfortable. There is a sofa in the studio for you, inside of the shooting room and all of our parents take this time to sit back, relax and enjoy having a babysitter for a few hours.
* Once you get there, I will totally take over, and only need you for skin to skin during the times your baby may not want to sleep, or for nursing/feeding
Caffeine
Please DO NOT drink caffeine 72 hours prior to your session if you are breastfeeding. Babies who are affected by caffeine tend to be very jumpy, tense and alert.
Newborn Safety
I am a qualified and accredited newborn photographer with years of experience and training. You can rest assured knowing that your baby will be in good hands. Safety of my clients comes first above any pose. Your baby is the boss and he/she will let me know if they are not comfortable with a certain pose and we will move on.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT AT MY SESSION?
When you arrive to my in-home studio, I will have the studio set up to start with the wrapped posed shots and/or family/sibling. My studio space is small and we like it to be quiet and calm during the posing session! There will be baby shusher OR a white noise machine playing to mimic the sound of the womb. Please note*** Little hands and feet play on my floor so please remove shoes at the front door when arriving. :)
My studio is located downstairs in my home. Please, please do not let your children run/roam un-attended through my home, & do not let your children play outside of my studio. If your children need to get outside, or out of the studio please walk with someone ALWAYS accompanying them. I appreciate the respect for my home and for my husband who often works remotely. Thank you for your understanding .
If sibling/family shots were requested, we will do them AFTER the newborn shots. The siblings/dad will be free to go grab a bite to eat, go to the park, etc. and we will notify them once were approaching time for their photos!
HOW LONG WILL MY SESSION LAST?
Full shoots typically take 2-3+ hours. Some babies like to sleep, some do not! We just go with the flow. The baby is always the boss!
WHAT DO WE NEED TO WEAR?
Parent/Sibling images are done on a neutral background (Black or White) black, white or cream tops are always the best choice when choosing outfits for these images! Jeans and a t-shirt are super comfy after all!
WHAT TO BRING TO YOUR NEWBORN SESSION?
Pease, NO outside props allowed. Please notify me if there is a special family heirloom or something significant to someones career choice, etc. (example: Police officer, fireman, etc.) that you would like included. Otheriwse, I have all we will need for the session and anything purchased may not be suitable for a newborn session as most props I use are made by professionals and made specific for newborn photography. (even things from Etsy, amazon, etc. may not be suitable, so please fill out your questionaire and let me know there if there is anything you want to see in your session!
Pacifier – Please bring one. Even if your baby does not take one from you (specifically if you are nursing, they can smell you and will want to nurse over soothing with a pacifier), they will usually take one from me. A baby’s natural born instinct is to suck and typically not having a pacifier to help your baby soothe off the breast, will make or break a session. Don’t worry, they won’t get nipple confusion as it’s not a food source.
Bottled Milk (not required) – If you have introduced a bottle to your baby, this is the preferred method of feeding during the session so we are certain how much baby is receiving (babies tend to wake a lot and root, and they really want to be pacified, not fed, so this way we know we are not overfeeding which causes extreme gas and discomfort). We will take breaks as we need to!
WHY INVEST?
Newborns are so little for so little amount of time, it flies by without you even noticing. Newborn photography is the art of freezing these moments in time so you can always go back and look at just how little and precious these moments really were!
SESSION FEES
This covers time & talent of the photographer along with your pre-session discussion about styling your session, my prep guide, access and use of my high end prop collection, wraps, bonnets, headbands, & backdrops. Fee also covers the final editing process where you will receive all of your professionally retouched images via personal online link in high resolution.
All newborn session packages require a 50% retainer to hold your due date in my calendar (the remaining session balance will be due day of session). Once you pick your desired newborn session package an invoice will be sent to you for the retainer. The retainer must be paid within 24 hours of the invoice being sent in order to hold your session. Once the invoice is paid you will be put in my calendar and then we wait for your little miracle to arrive!
